Unearthly Series by Cynthia Hand
Overall series: 4/5 stars on Goodreads
Recommended: If you like angels, this is a great angel story.... without sounding incredibly obvious.
Review:
I read this series in a really weird way. I read Unearthly nearly two years ago, and I just finished Boundless last week. I read this entire series over the span of two years, and I still enjoyed it all the same. Normally, a series loses me if I have to wait too long to read the next book, but this series didn't.
It was always easy to get back into the groove of this world, without retelling the other novels too much. It was a great balance of alluding to the important aspects of the preceding novels without being boring. I can definitely appreciate that, and for that I was very impressed.
Now let's get discussing the actual series!
Clara was a really great protagonist, in my opinion. What made her so great is that I never found her annoying. Occasionally, protagonists are annoying, and Clara really wasn't. She never had a hidden agenda, something that bothers me so much, and she usually took care in her decision making. It was great for a change that the protagonist was a self aware angel, as often these stories revolve around the character finding out about their lineage. I enjoyed that Clara always got answers, and she had solid mentors.
I've read a lot of angel stories, and they all try to have something different that sets them apart from the rest. I really liked the idea of the Purposes, in this series. Purposes are visions to the future that every angel blood has as a task from God. Clara has a purpose that she must fulfill in each novel, and hers always seem to involve Christian. The idea of Glory, and being able to wield weapons made up of it, was very cool, and I enjoyed everything that it brought. One thing I liked in particular is that these angels FLEW. In majority of the angel novels that I've read, they DON'T FLY ENOUGH. COME ON, you have WINGS for crying out loud. USE THEM! These guys didn't mess around with their wings, and used them properly.
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
One thing about this series that really made it enjoyable, was the fact that everything generally turned out O.K. in the end. That made the series very fun to read, because I knew that Team Good would win every time, even though we didn't always know how. I didn't get overly attached to the characters, but I really really liked them all. Angela was a really great character, and a time that I was shocked in these novels was when we found out she was pregnant, because I couldn't figure out how she was sick. Clara's brother was an irritating little sibling, but that was his role in the story. Clara always felt that she had to look after him, and he always rejected her help. Clara's mom was lovely, and it was sad when she died, even though her time on Earth was up. For some reason, I was never really scared of Samjeeza, because I knew innately that he wouldn't hurt Clara, and I think she knew that too. And then there are Tucker and Christian. Honestly, I thought that Clara was going to end up with Christian just because she was never going to see Tucker again. But, I'm not disappointed that she ended up with Tucker, because she really loved him. She never really loved Christian, even though he loved her. Oh tragic, unrequited, love. But they really worked as best friend.I wish, however, that Christian had ended up somewhere, or with someone, other that just a passing thought for Clara.
Overall, this series was really fun to read. If you're looking for a fun angel series, do not hesitate to pick up Unearthly, because you will not be disappointed! Happy reading!
