Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Goodreads rating: 5/5 stars

Recommended: If you're a fan of... The Dustlands Trilogy, or The Hunger Games.

Review:

In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king's champion.

Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass--and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world

I want to be Celaena Sardothien, or at least her best friend. But I certainly do NOT want to be her enemy.

Throne of Glass was a great book. From the start I fell in love with Celaena, and how great she is. The story peaked my interest right away, and kept me interested the whole way through. Being the first novel in a (presumably) long series, there were lots of expository moments, and the story was very driven by the need to explain everything to the reader. Which was great, for the first book in a series; the entire book was practically a set-up for the rest of the series. It did a great job too; I can’t wait to continue on with the series. I will say this though, I did not read The Assassin’s Blade prior to reading Throne of Glass, because I thought that you had to read the series first…. Clearly I do not listen to anybody. I even knew it was a companion bind up of novellas, I don’t know what I was thinking. (I think I am going to go back and read The Assassin’s Blade before I read Crown of Midnight, just to get some more context of Celaena and her past. Thoughts?)
Anyways, I would certainly recommend starting this series, because the first novel was extremely promising.

THIS IS THE END OF THE NON-SPOILER SECTION. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Let’s talk about how cool of a character Celaena was. Celeana has a very interesting inner dialogue, in which she has an obsessive need to know she has an ‘escape’ from any situation that she is in, or that she has a way to ‘defeat’ anybody she is facing. It is her coping mechanism for not being able to be in control while she is in Endovier, and it really quickly established her character. However, over the course of the story, as she starts to feel safer, she slowly stops her constant plotting… but her overall badassery never really goes away.

In my opinion, the whole ‘king’s champion’ competition was contrived to get context for the rest of the series. This is completely acceptable because Throne of Glass is the first book in a long series. But sometimes, I felt myself forgetting about the competition, because other things kept happening that would take away from the completion. This also could have been due to the fact that I had to read in 15-20 minute intervals because I’m so freaking busy right now!!! (Hence the unfortunate lack of blog posts, which makes me very sad)

Also, important thing I thought of while reading ToG…. Princess Nehemia looks like Tiana from the Princess and the Frog. Can you see it? I can see it, and I can’t un-see it.
IN CONCLUSION: There are so so so many things to explore in this series: magic; wyrdmarks; Celeana’s wyrdmark; what it will be like for Celeana to be the king’s champion; Celeana’s past.  I am super excited to keep reading this series, and every time I see Crown of Midnight, I have to resist the urge to buy it!!!!

Tell me your thoughts on Throne of Glass! Did you read the Assassin’s Blade first?

Read On,
B
