UNDERRATED BOOKS-TAG

HELLO! Today I am going to be doing yet another book tag... THE UNDERRATED BOOKS TAG! I saw Ariel Bissett do this tag and it just called my name. Let me tell you, one of my favourite things to do is hype underrated books, because they deserve it! So many of my favourite novels that I've ever read are novels that I have not heard many people talk about before. I have plans to continue on this trend, and to write full reviews and features about some of these novels, so stay tuned for that! Without any further ado, let's hype some books!

QUESTION #1: What’s one of your favourite books that you feel is underrated?

Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh

Perhaps this novel isn't really underrated, but I do find that not very many people mention it. This was my favourite book when I was probably 6 years old. I wanted to BE Harriet, right down to the composite notebook. This book is relatively popular, but I feel like not very many people mention it when they talk about books they read when they were younger. There was even a movie made about it! It was not very similar to the book itself, but it was close enough. I did read/watch the book and the movie a long time ago though, so I do not exactly remember. However, Harriet the Spy remains to be one of my favourite novels. I would still consider telling people to read it now, because it's still super cute.

QUESTION #2: If you could pick any underrated book to be turned into a movie, what would it be?
Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements

Alright friends, let's educate ourselves a tad here. This is me reaching into the depths of my shelves to bring forth Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements. This story follows the adventures of fifteen year old Bobby Phillips who wakes up one morning to discover.... he's invisible. Not metaphorically, the dude is see through. I read this book a while ago, but I really think that it would be a hilarious and also heart-warming movie. Bobby bumbling around when he can't see himself is really funny, and I think that there are many aspects of the novel that can resonate within ourselves, such as the feeling of being invisible. Also, the science aspect is crazy out-there and quirky, so that would be simple to follow for viewers, and also comedic. The sequel Things Hoped For isn't as great as the first novel, but the story is different, so it wasn't what I had hoped for.

QUESTION #3: What is a famous author that you feel isn't really well known?

End of Days by Eric Walters

Another one of my go-to literary hypes is Eric Walters. He is a Canadian author, and he has written some of my favourite books. To ME he is really well known, because we had his books in our school library, and we read them for Silver Birch and other times we had to read Canadian novels. He also comes to my elementary school every year or every other year to promote his newest book, and to sign some books (the book pictured above is signed to me!) His novels are awesome, and they deal with really serious world events or current issues. His novel Black and White is about this mixed couple, in this day and age, who are discriminated against, by their families and their community. His novel Shattered is about a bratty kid who has to finish his community service hours off at a soup kitchen, and meets a homeless man who was a peacekeeper during the Rwandan genocide. His most famous novels are We All Fall Down and United We Stand, which are about 9/11, and also his Camp X series, which is about the training camp in lower Ontario. His novels are all told from a distinctly teenaged voice, that I loved reading. He has lots of novels, and I would highly recommend picking one of them up.

QUESTION #4: If you could only pick one book to make well known and promote it to everybody, what would it be?
Kissed by an Angel by Elizabeth Chandler

This is a tough one because I find that I gravitate towards underrated series, as opposed to actual novels. So, I found a bit of a loophole. The bind up of the Kissed by an Angel series by Elizabeth Chandler was a book/series/I don't actually know, that I LOVED! I absolutely flew through this novel, I think I read this nearly 700 page book it in two days, during the school year. (Granted, it was eighth grade and I wasn't doing anything particularly important, but STILL.) I truly loved loved loved this series. It was emotional, and it just left me with a great feeling when I was finished reading it. It was a love story, but it was not one dimensional, and there was much mystery in it as well. I picked it up originally from a used bookstore, along with another novel by Elizabeth Chandler. Her Dark Secrets series was THE series to be reading in my grade, and so I felt all cool when I showed up reading, *gasp*, a different book by her. The reason that I would consider this a single book, is because all three books are bound into one. The series does continue with more books afterwards, but I read the first one, and I feel like they are unnecessary. They were also released MANY (try almost 20) years after the first three. The novel ended in a good place, and I think you can just read the bind up, and be done with it.

QUESTION #5: What is a favourite character of yours from an underrated book?
The Lost City of Faar by D.J. MacHale

I sort of cheated with this question, because I'm mentioning a character from a series that I'm already talking about later on. That character is Spader from the Pendragon series by D.J.MacHale. I LOVE this series, and Spader is my favourite character, just because of how youthful and fun he is. I obviously love Bobby too, and I really would say Bobby is my favourite from this series, but I had to give an honourable mention to Spader because he's just so darn cute.

QUESTION #6: What book series do you think is underrated?

The Pendragon Series by D.J. MacHale

This is easy, because this is my go-to underrated series. The Pendragon series by D.J.MacHale. I read the Pendragon series in elementary school, and I love this series so much. Bobby Pendragon, the protagonist, reminds me a lot of Percy from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series because he's always sarcastic, sassy, and cracking jokes. People who enjoyed the Percy Jackson series would really enjoy the Pendragon series as well, and I highly recommend it. The lead character Bobby is a Traveller, that travels through different dimensions to ultimately 'save the universe,' but it's really much more than that. I really think that it should be made into, not a movie, but a TV show. The Pendragon series would make an EXCEPTIONAL television series, quite like Doctor Who.  I think it would be a really awesome sci-fi show, and fans of the Doctor Who series would love it. There is SO MUCH content contained in these novels, and so many worlds to explore even further.

QUESTION #7: In what bookstore have you found your most underrated books?

I don't really have a great answer to this question. Most of these novels I had recommended to me, by my mom, librarians, or the internet. The one novel that I found out of the blue was Kissed by an Angel, which I found at a used bookstore. Other than that, I probably purchased the rest from Chapters once I had heard of them.

QUESTION #8: If you could take one not so well known character and turn them into a celebrity, who would it be?
I Googled Aiden St. Delphi and this came up... I'm totally OK with this being Aiden...

This question is so easily answered for me. Aiden St. Delphi from the Covenant series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. Let's just talk about the Covenant series for a minute. Recently, everyone has been talking about the Lux series also by Jennifer L. Armentrout, which is awesome because I love that series too, and THIS SERIES is just as good. I absolutely loved both the Lux series and the Covenant series, but the Covenant series gets less hype. I adore Aiden St. Delphi. He is amazing, and as a real life celebrity, you can best believe I'd have his poster on my wall. Sorry I'm not even that sorry.

QUESTION #9: Are you the type of person to tell people about books you think are underrated, or do you like to keep them secret?

One of my favourite things to do is to talk about books, and hyping underrated books comes with the territory. I love telling people about underrated books, because then we have a super special connection that we share through said book.
